Sanctions and export control lawyers in with the Squire Patton Boggs, Washington, DC, International Trade & Foreign Investment Practice, Jeffrey Orenstein and Peter C. Alfano III are participating in an upcoming course to discuss the evolving and increasing risks to non-US companies associated with the extraterritorial application of US export controls and sanctions. Issues discussed will be relevant to non-US companies, both for ordinary transaction compliance, and in the context of M&A and other business partnerships to address the risks arising from extraterritorial application of export controls/sanctions laws.

Presenters
Peter Alfano is a partner in the International Trade & Foreign Investment Practice Group, advising global clients on the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS) and US national security regulatory matters.
He represents both US businesses and foreign investors in assessing CFIUS risks and obligations, structuring transactions, negotiating and implementing national security agreements, as well as managing ongoing compliance requirements. In parallel, Peter has more than 15 years of experience guiding clients through complex export control regimes, including the EAR, ECRA, and ITAR, as well as related national security frameworks such as the Information and Communications Technology and Services (ICTS) regulations, OFAC sanctions and other controls that intersect with cross border investment and technology transfer.
Jeffrey Orenstein is a partner in the International Trade & Foreign Investment Practice Group who advises clients across sectors on complex sanctions and embargo compliance.
He has significant experience in regulatory compliance, investigations, due diligence, training and enforcement matters involving sanctions and embargos, including those administered by OFAC; export controls, including the EAR, administered by the US Department of Commerce’s BIS and the ITAR, administered by the US Department of State’s DDTC; and customs regulations, administered by US CBP and trade remedies imposed by the USTR and US Department of Commerce. Going beyond compliance, he seeks creative ways to turn regulatory requirements to his clients’ advantage.
Fabrizio Vismara is a full professor of international law and director of the Research Center for Customs Law and International Trade at the University of Insubria. A lawyer specializing in corporate and tax law, he is also a partner in the Litigation and Tax Law department of Squire Patton Boggs in Milan.
